As Jim and I are moving much furniture in our house these days, and rearranging our living spaces so that he can have a studio of his own, the progress on this piece is slow but steady. I "wove" lace curtains with the help of a white permanent gel pen from Staples (wonderful for stark, white, fine-point details!), put in the lit areas of the couple's hair, stroked in the mid-layer of her sweater, colored the napkins (Payne's Gray and Shiraz Inktense). Also began the shadow details in the wineglasses' stems, and used Payne's Gray Inktense pencil to shadow the table's paper cover, as well as the wooden block holding the menu. I'm loving the opacity of the Dr. Martin's Bombay white ink. I wish I could scroll forward to next week's postings so I could see how this turns out!
Wow- those curtains are great! What size is the image? Now I want to get some Bombay white ink, too. Can you tint over it with watercolor or Inktense?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Marian. The watercolor paper is a 9 x 12 sheet torn from a watercolor pad. Yes, I'm so loving that ink (Dr. Ph Martin's Bombay White India Ink is the full product name)... in combo with details done with the gel pen made by Pentel (it's called "sunburst" medium gel, got it from Staples). The gel pen is even more opaque than the bottle of ink, and permanent. I find it works best if I use it gently on the paper, not pressed like you would a ball point, as it will scratch it's own line if you do. The Inktense draws and paints nicely over both of those! Watercolor...ok, sort of. I did find that like acrylic paints, the acrylic ink is tough to watercolor over, but the Inktense works better over the acrylic ink if you do layers, letting it dry between. This painting would've been easier if I'd just done an acrylic ink wash of some areas, not the whole friggin picture!
DeleteI love the textures you are creating in this. I have used white ink, but not that particular brand. I am going to have to go on line and do some research. Enjoying watching this progress.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joyce. Yes, as I've replied to Marian above, it's changed the way I do a lot of my sketches. But I'd highly recommend the gel pen. Again, refer to above reply... maybe you can get that at a local Staples or office supply. Very inexpensive! Marian and I can purchase the Bombay India Ink locally at Akamai, but maybe you have a good art supply in Texas that will have it. I've devoted much of the day today to refining the wine glasses and other details, so we'll see what tonight's scan will reveal! I'll save the faces for the last day.
