Manresa Castle

This week Jim and I interrupted our "stay-cation" or stay-at-home vacation to stop at Jefferson Hospital in Port Townsend so Jim could get his allergy shots.   I waited in the car and drew the parking lot's view of Manresa Castle across the street.   I wonder which window is the haunted room?

Toned, acid-free recycled paper with Conte crayon sticks and Staedtler pigment liner (01), as well as white Pentel Sunburst medium gel pen.

  1. The white trees are so delicate- and possibly nervous! I stayed there one time, but nothing untoward happened. I think it was the town crier's room. This is a great portrait of a place.

    1. Thank you, Marian! I do think the trees are nervous. I purposefully left out the mist of new green leaves on them so the building was more visible. I hadn't intended for them to make it seem more macabre, but now that I look at it, they look a little like skeletal hands held up over the eyes (windows) of the castle! I've never even been in the building, but would love to at least go to dinner sometime.

  2. It's a very striking image, and looking very much like a haunted house, with the trees almost standing in for lightning bolts. I really like the composition, the colors, and the atmosphere you captured.

    1. Thanks! Yeah, maybe subconsciously I must've been trying to put across those images with the trees, but at the time, I just wanted them to stand out from the coniferous tree behind them, as well as the walls themselves. They ended up being really stark, as I only had four conte colors, and had to divvy up the values from dark to light. Maybe I can get Tim Burton to hire me for his story boards.
